ELCA Social Statement: Human Sexuality; Gift and Trust |
|
In August 2009, the Church-wide Assembly of the ELCA voted to adopt the social statement, Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust, which addresses marriage, same-gender relationships, families, protecting children, friendships, commitment, social responsibility and moral discernment. Part of the statement changes policy to allow those in committed, lifelong, monogamous same sex relationships to be pastoral or lay ministers in the ELCA. All ELCA congregations continue to have the right to call or refuse to call any pastor or lay minister on the list.
In December 2009, the Lord of Life Church Council appointed a task force to assess the sentiments of the congregation on this subject, and to organize informational sessions on various aspects of this statement. Summaries of task force efforts and additional supporting information are can be found below. It is the task force’s intention to post as much information as possible and practical from all related presentations.
The Council asks that comments about task force efforts and ideas for additional actions be directed to the Council, not individual task force members.
If you wish to further research this topic, copies of the statement and related articles, newsletters and books are available in the LOL library. The statement itself and related links are also available at www.elca.org.
